Eternal Flame of Great Mother

Even though I can be quite verbal, I paint from a space beyond words. A felt sense of form and color guides me. For me, painting is a way to access a primordial knowing of the mystery that we carry deep in our souls. I feel kinship with my ancestral cave painters.

I intend my art to be healing for people and the spaces where it hangs.

Here are some ideas about how to receive healing from art:

Engage with soft eyes

  • Sense or imagine the backside of your eyes, the soft tissue where your eyes share a border with your brain.
  • Gaze at the painting with “infant eyes,” sensing forms and discovering color as if for the first time.
  • Feel the sensations in your body as the painting enters your nervous system.
  • Soften your focus, not trying to name what you see or create a story.
  • Let the image imprint on your felt sense.
  • Share your impressions in the comments below.

I start with a felt sense of prayer. I am on a journey into the unknown.   I am not illustrating an idea. I don’t start with a finished picture and try to create it. As I let what wants to be painted through me emerge, I feel a sense of discovery.

For years before I had a name for the Akashic Field, I tapped into it while painting, as if an unseen hand was guiding my hand to mix colors and apply them to canvas, wood or paper.

When a painting is complete, I often have no words. At that point, I turn to friends and patrons to ask for their reflections. From their sharing, I learn more about the paintings.

Naming my paintings helps integrate and ground the felt sense, making what has been unconscious become conscious.
